Considering Seattle: "Twin Peaks" Tuesday

A week ago was another time, a simpler time. A time before I noticed the cult series “Twin Peaks”.

Sure, I had heard of the show in passing and friends had recommended that I check it out.

But the idea of watching “Twin Peaks” never struck a lasting chord.

That was until this past weekend, where everything changed…

Saturday Justin and I found ourselves at a delightfully Seattle-ly event, the noir housewarming party of a friend. The gathering had a “Twin Peaks” theme that was evident everywhere. The home was decorated to the match the show's rustic feel, the "Twin Peaks" soundtrack was played in abundance, and there were even renditions of Audrey Horne’s offbeat dancing.

And when the night ended, I noted "Twin Peaks" as something interesting to look into on some unscheduled future date.

Well, so I thought.

On Sunday afternoon my husband and I stopped at the Capitol Hill hipster reservoir High 5 Pie. And what do I unexpectedly learn? That my local pie shop has ‘Twin Peaks Tuesdays’ where they regularly screen episodes of the show while featuring a special “Twin Peaks” menu (seen below).

One to many cues from the universe. I remember that M. Night Shyamalan film “Signs” and decided it was time to swing away, which is to say Justin and I went home and started watching the show.

So far we have simple conclusions; "Twin Peaks" is very odd, yet in the strangeness that defines the show is something refreshing and wildly complicated. It is safe to reason we will finish the show.

But then yesterday during the home screening of episode three I thought I recognized a sign in the background from one of my wandering about Washington trips. And by gum, I learned that “Twin Peaks” was filmed nearby.

Apparently "Twin Peaks" is not just a strange mystery show it is a strange mystery show about Washington!

I see a road trip in the future.

So, I have something exciting and noir to look forward to.

But for now I am just going to enjoy this damn good coffee and pie.

Of Malt and Men

I love malted beverages. Therefore it is no real surprise that today when my man inquired “what exactly is malt?” I was surprised that I did not know the answer.
Well, I knew a little. You see as a past ice cream sales gal I knew that malt can come in a powdered form and when added with milk to ice cream you create a malted milkshake or 'malt'. A slightly more exotic milkshake. I also knew that malt is a critical element in malted milk balls, a fantastic treat for anyone pretending they are out on a date in the 1950s. And I thought I
remember malt being involved in the creation of beer... but wasn't sure.

So I did a bit of “research*”

According to the Free Dictionary malt is indeed a “grain, usually barley, that has been allowed to sprout, used chiefly in brewing and distilling.” The entry continues to explain that something is malted when it is “treat(ed) or mix(ed) with malt or a malt extract.” Therefore I was somewhat right, malt is a grain often used in the brewing of hoppy beverages (i.e. - beer and whiskey).

From Wikipedia I learned that malt is also used in malt vinegar. This makes obvious sense however I had never really put two and two together before, after all, malt vinegar is a far cry from malted milkshakes.
In the realm of malted milk balls I learned that there is an internationally renowned candy called “Malteser”. I am guessing the taste is similar to 'Whoppers' or 'Robin’s Eggs' in the US? But who knows, maybe I will stumble upon the candy on my next travel adventure?!

Malt is also used in a number of beverages including one I have heard of but never consumed myself: “Ovaltine”. You may remember Ovaltine from the holiday movie “A Christmas Story”. This I found amusing as I happened to catch the musical version of “A Christmas Story” when it came to town (I highly recommend it for a good holiday time).

But the subject of malt gets even more exotic from here... or at least more vintage feeling. The most unexpected of these malted foods is malt loaf (Here is a recipe). It seems increasingly like everything was made into a loaf back in the day.

Wikipedia also makes note of radio malt, which as best as I can tell appears to be a sweet malted substance said to taste like molasses and treacle (one of those wondrous foods available in the UK that somehow doesn’t yet have a fan base in the US... at least not one I am aware of.). What really struck me about radio malt is that this substance is beloved by a children's book character I had never heard of before: the intriguing prep school student Nigel Molesworth. Nigel attends what may very well be one of the most delightfully titled prep schools in the history of children's stories: St. Custard’s academy. Have any of you read these books or heard of Nigel? Moreover, can anyone think of any other well titled children's book prep schools?

There is a malted "soda-like" beverage called Malta Goya
Here is a recipe for Matcha Green Tea Malted Milkshake (awful or great I don't know?!)
Here is a Malt Shop Cruise which looks like an ideal place to meet many people dressed as Elvis and the actual Beach Boys!
It was William Horlick who had the first patent on malt. He also had a great beard, but wouldn't such a beard have made it challenging to consume a malt?

*A Side Note on the term "research" in this blog:
I do recognize that a quick Internet search does not begin to constitute actual fact. However, in my experience often reading a number of 'questionable' sources, such as Wikipedia and the like, can glint some information. Moreover, these sorts of sources generate a basis for furthered understanding. The debate over what counts as "research" is nothing new. In fact anyone who is my age is likely to argue this whole “correct” source thing into the ground but that is not my goal. The point of this rambling is to let you know, straight out, that I did not read any academic journals or primary sources in the writing of this or likely any other blog entry I write. This is a caveat; please do not use my quick resource gathering to back your thesis! Also it is worth noting that I like academic journals and primary sources, so the occasional real source could appear and if it does I will site it, maybe in MLA or APA but I am not promising anything.

Oh and in the wildly unlikely situation arises wherein you do want to use this blog in your thesis or anything else, please ask.

It has been awhile but I have returned.

I have been working on a number of new ventures spanning a wide web of content and musings. These projects include Crafts, photography (check out my Photography Blog: Amara Takes a Picture), media, travel, and a whole lot more. So get some pink lemonade* and keep an eye on this blog, it might just surprise you... or better yet amuse.

Three Days of Dynamic Delight

What a quirky and fun Fourth I had this year...

I should have known it would be one of a kind from the start. First thing I spotted on Saturday were these gigantic purple puff ball flowers. (I had a Scientist pose in the photo for relativity!)
Here is one up close. Is it just me or does this flower look like a cross between a Dr. Seuss illustration and some mysterious alien flora?
We stopped in a shop where we determined that someday we will need dragon slide on the side of our home, much like this:
After some house planning we took a little day trip away from the city. Can anyone guess where we ended up?
Who knew there was a Piccadilly circus in Washington?!

Justin dug right in.
Less then a block away I spotted the new dress of my dreams. Talk about a standout prom gown!
Still attempting to figure out where I would wear that dress in Seattle, we took a short stroll by the park.

Then on the way out of town I spotted three Easter egg colored homes. They were so cute, I wonder if the owners are friends?
As the last event of Saturday we stopped by a farm on the way home where Justin got some honey-sticks as a treat for school.
But that was just the start, later that weekend we attended a birthday party where we got to try out deep fried pickles with some of our best friends.

After all that excitement we opted to stay in for the Fourth and have a calm day.

The Return of Snowpocalypse

Snowpocalypse is what we call it when there is snow in Seattle. The term reflects the dramatic nature and all around freakout that Seattleites have when beautiful snowflakes fall from the sky.

Reading about the 2009 Snowpolcalypse did not prepare me. I doubt anything could prepare me, as someone who spent her middle school years standing unfazed in feet of Wisconsin snow.

Sure, I had suspected that reactions would be dramatic, there were indicators.

There have been impossible grocery lines for the last few weeks. And Pemco plastered this First Snowfall Freakout Lady advertisement on the buses throughout town (on a side note how great is the Pemco ad campaign?!.. hehe)

Sure, Seattle is covered in hills and I had overheard that there were not "facilities" to clear the roads...

But snow has turned Seattle a little mad.

On the walk home from work yesterday a total stranger (in a nice suit mind you) decided to 'shoe ski' across the street while laughing like the Joker. Once I got home I would learn that my local friends were stuck throughout the area attempting multi-hour treks to get home from modified bus routes. Capitol Hill residents gave up on all attempts to proceed maturely and decided to go "sledding" last night . And all night long I listened to the hip-hop squeal of drivers attempting to move "eco-friendly" cars up hills that have not been plowed.

What will my second day of the second Snowpocalypse hold? Who knows, but I am bringing my camera.

Retro TV Reviews: The Addams Family Season One

"He turns a mundane tasks into an adventure" - Gomez on Uncle Fester's cracking of the family safe.

Many of my generation know The Addams Family from the wildly successful movies

But the Addam's Family really date back to the work artist, Charles Addams, whose work

regularly appeared in the New Yorker and later served as the inspiration for the classic TV show...

that inspired the (previously mentioned) movies.

While the show is all but forgotten by the masses, The Addams Family is still going strong

having recently been the subject of a new musical in NY.

So what is it about The Addamses?

Morticia and Gomez obviously adore each other. They appreciate antiques. They have defined personal style. They respect everyone. They are always kind. They are actively involved in their children's lives. They speak French. They game together. She is an avid hortoculturist. They both fence. And they always manage to see the best in everyone.

Wait is it... possible that The Addams family represents an American ideal?

Sure the show had downsides (such as that dolt of a son, Puglsey) but The Addamses seemed to be keenly aware of coming trends and modern perspectives.

Here is a list of the season one advanced ideas/modern wisdom from The Addams Family:

Personal travel into space
Goth clothing
Learning about/from other cultures
Keeping the romance alive
Marrying your best friend
Family togetherness
Valuing advancing technologies
Staying true to yourself
Not to take wealth too seriously

So far there appear to be some brilliant gems hidden within the context of the show. Add in the short and snappy episodes and this show is well worth viewing. You may not laugh out loud, but chances are sometimes The Addams will help you crack a smile.

My Date with Destiny.

Sewing has been a long time coming in my life. My mother sews and tried her best to rouse my interest in the subject me as a child. Unfortunately, my childhood desire to sew stopped dead when hair scrunchies fell out of favor (...I miss you 1980s).

So, it wasn’t until about a year ago that my interest in creating clothes was exposed.

Seemingly out of nowhere the resistance I had built up to sewing was flanked. On one bank by was the always smartly dressed Zooey Deschanel and on the other was the opportunity to run the Volunteers at a Japanese Fashion Convention.

As celebrities go I like Zooey. Hers is a world that always seems, at least on the tabloid surface, like a delightful reminder of the good, deliciously weird, and evolving nature of life. And to sweeten the appeal, she sings in a strange little band.

Then this happened:

I immediately went online to see the full AD campaign, that included the inspirational idea of creating a stylebook, brilliant!

Around the same time I was actively looking for volunteer work to establish myself in the Seattle scene, meet new people, and of course have fun (as it is a fact that volunteers have great fun). A well schooled geek, I stumbled into a flyer for Innosera, the new local gothic Lolita clothing convention. Next thing I know I am dreaming of clothing covered in pictures of blue berries, ribbons and laces, and fashion so brave it is inevitable that it would come from Japan.

Suddenly there was no choice, sewing was back knocking at my doorstep… as per usual mom was right.

As it turns out sewing is a natural fit for me. I love clothes and I have often longed for one of a kind fashions at affordable prices done in an environmentally sound manner. Sure, I am still daunted every time I cut out a pattern (mocking bravery I take scissors to cute patterns and with bated breath cut fabric…) but I know something has shifted, this is a skill I am excited to learn.

Burrowing in the Rain

In my experience most city magazines are irrational. Often highlighting activities and events that so differ from the daily experiences of the public that it is challenging to understand why they exist. This, however, cannot be said for the honest and truly local Seattle magazine. The January 2010 issue is exceptional and did a proper job of stirring my brain contents, specifically in regards to the delightful complexity that is Seattleite-sim.

As anyone, who has spent more than two touristy days in our drizzly city, knows Seattle is made up of sections referred to as neighborhoods, districts, or, if you spend time with me, burrows (I like the term burrow because it feels warm and cozy like home or a special cup of hot chocolate!).

Now if I haven’t lost you yet, these burrows often have secondary nicknames. I, for example, live in First Hill that is more often referred to as “Pill Hill” because it is where the hospitals are located. At least I hope that’s why…

Equally complex are the distinctions of where the lines are drawn from one neighborhood to the next. Sometimes the separating lines are vivid and well marked but often a debate of the districts becomes an invigorated discussion.

A good knowledge of these burrow limits is a sought after ability often honed in discussions while drinking the grande soy lattes of everyday life. From these interactions city dwells often become impassioned as to where these burrow definitions lie.

Which leads me back to Seattle magazine where this afternoon I encountered a term that turned my city sensibilities on end. The article “Best Breakfasts” coined the term “Frelard” referring to the blurry area between Ballard and Fremont.

At first this caused me to pause but then began an idea of pure merriment: To name the undefined zones of Seattle. This so amuses me that I created one:

First Down: First Hill/Downtown or what I am now calling the walk from home to the library. Yes technically this is the area above the I-5 but there are flowers and people walk there. I reckon it deserves a title.

So do any of you have a good nickname for a Seattle burrow blurry zone? Here are some areas that could use the help:

Maple Leaf/The U District, I District/Sodo, Wallingford/Fremont

Conversations with M

After a day filled to the brim with steam, cogs, and other mechanical wonders, the Adventures of Amara lead to a voice box dialer talk with the Philosopher, Searcher, Advisor, and Close Friend that is M (identity hidden for all the internet reasons).

M is a good friend who lives in a particularly unique town I once spent time in. He is a fellow Writer and a particularly good source of balancing calm for myself and a long standing group of friends. Due to distance we only speak about once a year but I have the utmost appreciation for those talks. They can be recharging.

M always reminds me of the value of working on friendships. Yes, I said working on. Friends move apart, friends loose touch, friendship can require work because real life involves schedules, family, and a seemingly endless sea of tasks.

The appreciation of ones M(s) is upmost to maintaining a good working self. So maybe the word 'work' isn't right, maybe the active participation within important relationships comes closer to Zen and the Art of M maintenance.

Regardless, it is a simple yet important suggestion dear internet that you call up your M(s) and check in soon.

Steamcon and Other Excuses

I have been busy my lovelies... yes, I will be catching up and some of those catch up Halloween posts are such fun.

Today I am at Steamcon in Seatac, WA... Victorian fashion collides artfully with futuristic technology. And the costumes, some of the best I've seen in years. If you live in the area, have the means, and like a good back to the future geekery this the place to be! If you can't join in there is always a hot cup of tea and the Serenity soundtrack while you start on your costume for next year.

Climate Change is a Priority.

If there is one problem which stands out as critical to the long term survival of the human race, it would be climate change. Those of us who are lucky enough to be born into wealthy countries all too often abuse our resources, and we are seeing the results. We have colder winters, hotter summers, and increased problems with the natural flow of the environment. We must change.

Change is a key tenet in the United States; it was key to our current President's election, and is the embodiment of the economic turmoil that has hit the world. Proudly we all stand up and, as a group, declare that we are believers in change. But are we really executing these changes?

When I was seven years old a television show, most likely Reading Rainbow, explained to me that a rock in the tank of your toilet could significantly reduce water use. By simply placing a large rock in the tank, I would be helping us, as people, to maintain one of our most precious resources. I have known this for a long time, but have never gotten around to it. That rock has never been a priority... today that changes.

I am putting a rock in that tank, because I believe that climate changed caused by poor treatment of the environment is the single most critical issue to everyone. Before our cross-cultural clashes, before our need to win over each other economically, before anything else... we are people who share this earth. As such every single one of us has a responsibility to make sure our climate is live-able... and that starts by making changes and not just talking about them.

My Simple Suggestions:

put a rock in your toilet tank
separate trash and recycle/reuse whenever possible
consider buying used/vintage/ or second hand
support companies that make the environment a priority, among my favorites is Patagonia
bike or walk whenever possible, actively choose to only use the car when you need to.
bake more than one thing at a time, so you use the oven in the most responsible manner.

According to completely unofficial counting from the website there appear to be:

19 100gram standard bars

4 250gram king sized bars - one of which is the flavor "Biscuits and Nuts" which did not appear on the 100gram listing

7 flavors in the colorful chocolate minis

4 flavors in the dark chocolate minis

The site is visually vibrant but not arranged in a way that makes the most sense to a US audience, where is the flavor list??? So after deciding I would surely make a mistake guessing I sent this message, hopefully it will be responded too:

Hello, I am interested in getting a list of all the flavors of Ritter Sport. I attempted to determine this via the flash animation but figured it might be simpler just to ask. Also just out of curiosity would you be willing to tell me about some of the odder flavors you have had in the past, any holiday specific flavors, and maybe about bars which have been retired.
